Weave's Growth Spurt

Open Letter to Weave Readers, Subscribers & Contributors,

Weave has been growing steadily since we began four years ago this month. What started as a two-person project has flourished into a team of more than a dozen, publishing hundreds of writers and artists. Yet, with a team consisting entirely of volunteers who all have jobs (including myself), it has become difficult to find the time to make any changes that will encourage further progress.

In order to keep up with this growth, we have decided to move the publication of issue 08 to winter, most likely early 2013. Therefore no issue will be released in June this year. We will, of course, fulfill any current or future subscriptions affected by this change; those that are owed issue 08 will receive it in early 2013. As a thank you gift, all subscribes to issue's 07 & 08 by June 31st will receive a back issue of Weave for free! So SUBSCRIBE today!

Some of the upcoming changes include bringing on new staff, experimenting with the design of our print issues, and developing more online content. Weave's online book reviews are already expanding under the leadership of our new Reviews Editor, Thom Dawkins.

Additionally, we are announcing a new reading period. As of today Weave is open to submissions September 1st through May 31st. We will remain open year-round for current subscribers. 

We appreciate your patience during our growth spurt over the next six months. We're excited about these changes and hope you are too.

A Note to Weave's Issue 07 Submitters

Dearest Issue 07 Submitters,

We're sorry we haven't been in touch sooner. The Weave staff has been busily reading submissions in our free time in preparation for our next issue. Between April and July 2011 we received more than twice the number of submissions than the previous reading period. If you still have an outstanding submission with Weave from our previous reading period, we offer our most sincere apologies. Most of our staff are writers too, so we understand what it's like to wait to hear back about a submission you sent in June. You can guarantee that many of us stare longingly at our inboxes mere moments after we hit the send button. Simply put, we empathize.

That said, we also have high standards as editors. We want to give every story or poem the thoughtful consideration it deserves. Many of you have already queried, and you still can by emailing us for a more personal update on the status of your submission. It is most likely, though, that your submission is still under consideration.

You may have also noticed that we posted the contributor list for issue 07. Where does that leave the outstanding submissions from the issue 07 reading period, you might ask? Excellent question! After careful thought, I decided it was best to consider the remaining submissions for our next issue. Our seventh issue is the biggest yet (around 120 pages!) and in order to finish the lengthy process of layout, final edits, and printing on time, I decided close the pages of lucky number seven.

We understand that this was not part of the original deal you made with Weave when you trusted us with your work. If you feel you need to withdraw your piece from consideration, we understand. But if you are open to being considered for issue eight, well, hang in there! Take a deep breath, turn off your computer, and spend some quality time with friends and family. In the mean time, we sincerely appreciate your continued patience and we'll do our best to get back to you as soon as possible!

Spring Announcements

There are new things happening at Weave this spring, not the least of which is that we reopen to submissions TODAY!

First and foremost, we’re gearing up to release our sixth issue that is packed with poetry, flash, fiction and nonfiction that we hope will tickle your funny bone, engage your mind-grapes, quench your thirsty dark heart, and spawn new works of creativity! Issue 06 reveals the gray areas between pleasure and pain, beauty and ugliness. There is magic realism, realistic fiction, and fairy tales retold. This issue is also very socially current with pieces that speak to racism, sexism, war, and the price of fame. We know you will love this issue, featuring poetry by Nin Andrews, Naomi Ayala, Rebecca Dunham, and Sally Rosen Kindred. Fiction by Lauren Becker, Z.Z. Boone, Jane McCafferty and Mary O’Donnell. Next Saturday, April 23rd at Remedy in Lawrenceville we will dance into spring and literature with our Spring Reading Celebration. Weave joins forces with Caper Literary Journal and Pear Noir! to bring you readings by Weave issue 05 contributors Nour Abdelghani, Karen Lizon and Dalena Moser; Pear Noir! contributors Tao Lin & Megan Boyle, Noah Cicero, Jordan Castro & Mallory Whitten, and Scott McClanahan; and Caper contributors Rae Bryant, Laura E. Weave is also excited to announce our first annual Poetry and Flash Fiction Contests for issue 07. Lisa Marie Basile will judge for poetry and Bridgette Shade will judge flash fiction. The winners in both genres receive $100 and publication in our next issue. There are also three honorable mentions in each category. $6 per entry. Weave and local indie pop-up retailer Fleeting Pages are teaming up to do weekly workshops and readings to feature local poets and writers. If you are interested in helping lead a workshop with Weave and being a featured reader at a reading, please contact Laura at weavezine@gmail.com.

A reminder for all interested writers and artists: Weave's submission deadline
for Issue 03, due out in October, is this Monday, August 31, 2009.

Submission Guideline Changes

As we reopen for our third issue, Weave Magazine has had to make some changes to our submission guidelines regarding longer pieces of fiction and creative non-fiction. Here is a synopsis of the specific guidelines we have changed.

- For both fiction and creative non-fiction, unsolicited submissions should be no longer than 1500 words. For pieces longer than 1500, please submit a query letter and include the title, word count and a basic synopsis of the piece.

- For all submissions, please submit only ONCE during the reading period, unless otherwise requested by an editor.

If you have already submitted fiction or non-fiction during this reading period, the first change does not apply at this point. Anyone submitting fiction after 12pm today must follow these new guidelines.

Happy Holidays from Weave!

We here at Weave are gearing up for the holidays, like we expect many of you are, but just wanted to send out a reminder that we are still open for submissions for issue 02 and will be through the end of January. A lot of lovely work has been sent to us this round and we have truly enjoyed reading everything sent to us. Right now we're especially interested in reading more poetry for issue 02. As for fiction, we're just about full up, but still welcome more submissions, of course.

Also, thanks to everyone who has applied for a fiction reader position. We are humbled by the interest that has been shown and hope to get to work with some of you soon!

Issue 01 is still for sale here! We'd love you to take a look at it, especially if you plan to submit or apply for a fiction reader position here at Weave.

Reminders from Weave

With all the success we have seen, with our grant funding and amazing contributors for issue one, it's hard to believe that Weave Magazine is barely six months old. Sometimes when you are a fledgling journal, it can be difficult to keep the momentum going with regard to submissions and inquiries.

While we will be very busy over the next two months with preparation for the issue one release, we absolutely love seeing new submissions in our inbox. We are still open for submissions for issue two until January 31, 2009. Please see our submission guidelines to stay up-to-date on any changes.
